As of April 24th 2020 the Corona Virus has spread around the world to over 200 countries with 2.7 million confirmed cases and tragically 191.000 have died. The world population is 7.8 billion and it grows with 83 million annually. So during the Corona Virus outbreak since Dec 2019 the world population grew by 33.2 million and we lost 191K which still leaves us with 33 million new people on planet earth. My heart bleeds for families impacted by COVID 19 and for sure there were many of those 191.000 who died globally who went before their time and that is tragic. However, the socio-economic ramifications of this disease over the coming years will be far more devastating to individuals, families, and children. They estimate 195 million jobs are lost in travel, hotels, entertainment, restaurants, energy, transportation and manufacturing. The impact that will have on families being financially decimated with high unemployment will undoubtedly have tragic consequences . The consequent joblessness, evictions and bankruptcies will push despair and depression to unprecedented levels. This would lead to a surge in opiate and anti-depressant use, alcohol abuse and accidental overdoses, not to mention suicides.
Governments around the world need to open up economies again to allow businesses to resume business as usual to provide people with an opportunity to make a livelihood again. We need people back at work, earning money, getting their dignity back and kick starting the economy with some spending again. If this lock down continues for a few more months there will be no business to open and everything will be state owned. We tried communism in the 20th century and it didn’t work so unless government’s fancy posters of Stalin and Lenin in their offices its time for action.
