Big Data: Is it merely a buzzword or a real benefit? Big data is like teenage sex: everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it...

Opinion is split across Industry leaders, whilst some maintain “Big Data’s” usage and very real benefits, others are in utter abhorrence of the buzzword, downplaying it to a mere marketing construct, invented primarily to drive more Supplier sales. Amongst the latter, many prefer to use action words to describe the act of managing information “Intelligence Management” or “Efficient Information Management”

Global Data usage has grown by a whopping 131% CAGR in the last year (Nelson), Europe has as of 2013 overtaken the US in terms of data usage. This has been driven primarily by the growth in smartphones and data bundles.

Call a rose a rose by any other name and it is still a rose, it is clear that Data is growing and it’s proper management and understanding has gained increasing focus. AT the recent CIO summit, it would appear that CIO’s prefer to speak of actions on data that derive value rather than use the buzzword, Technology Marketers be warned!
